Federer opens up on emotional moment with Rafael Nadal

Roger Federer has spoken about the moment he was snapped holding hands with Rafael Nadal during his emotional final match at the Laver Cup, describing it as a “secret thank you”.

Though Nadal and Federer lost their doubles match, there wasn’t a dry eye in the arena as the reality of Federer’s retirement and completion of his final match sunk in.

The icons have been both rivals and teammates over the years, winning a combined 42 Grand Slam singles titles.

After the match emotions were high with the pair sitting next to each other and crying, with Federer then reaching out to hold Nadal’s hand.

With a photo capturing the moment going viral, Federer told the New York Times the act was a “secret thank you” to Nadal.

“Well, I mean, it was a short moment,” Federer said.

“I think at one point, I was sobbing so hard, and I don’t know, everything was going through my mind about how happy I am to actually experience this moment right there with everybody.

“And I think that’s what was so beautiful about just sitting there, taking it all in while the music was playing, and the focus was maybe more on her (the singer Ellie Goulding). So, you almost forgot that you’re still being taken pictures of.

“I guess at one point, just because obviously I couldn’t speak and the music was there, I guess I just touched him, and I guess it’s maybe a secret thank you.

“I don’t know what it was, but for me, that’s maybe what it was and how it felt and some pictures came out of it. Different ones.

“Not just that one but other ones, too, that were just completely crazy, you know, so with different angles, and I hope to get those because they mean a lot to me.”

The emotional moment comes after the 41-year-old announced his retirement earlier this month.

Though the potential to add more wins to his lengthy list of victories, Federer said he hopes he can continue to play in exhibition matches.

“I think it would be beautiful to somehow have a goodbye exhibition game, you know, and thank the fans, because obviously Laver Cup was already sold out before I knew about retirement,” Federer said.

“A lot of people would have loved to get more tickets and couldn’t, so I just feel maybe it would be nice to have one more or several goodbye exhibitions, but I’m not sure if I could or I should do that now.

“But obviously I would love to play exhibitions down the road, take tennis to new places or take it back to fun places where I had a blast.”

Image: Twitter

Novak Djokovic’s dad slams “jealous” Roger Federer

Novak Djokovic’s father has accused Roger Federer of being “jealous” of his son as the rivalry between the two tennis legends continue.

Speaking to Serbian newspaper Novosti, Srdan Djokovic said the Swiss ace was jealous of the Serbian for being the “better” player.

“Federer has been jealous of Novak since the moment he made his breakthrough because he knew that my son was better than him and that he would tower over him,” Srdan said.

“Federer is an outstanding tennis player, but I couldn’t say that about his humanity.”

Srdan also lamented the media portrayal of the current world number one player. “It is unbelievable what everything is written about Novak,” he said.

“Nobody in the history of sports, not just tennis, accepts defeats like Novak. If he loses, he will go … even towards his opponents, congratulates them, kisses them and tells them, ‘Bravo, master, you were better than me today.’

“And yet he has never received a fair play award like the one that Federer is constantly given.”

In a press conference on Wednesday, Novak jokingly said that he, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer avoid each other in the locker room.

“We mostly avoid each other,” he laughed.

“Locker rooms aren’t that big everywhere, so we sometimes hide behind our lockers or something like that.”

He added, “Sometimes we take shower cabins next to each other, but we don’t look. It’s a bit uncomfortable, we are in awkward situations there with our team, huge emotions are on the line.”

Trump’s big blow: Federal appeals court rules in favour of Twitter critics

A federal appeals court has ruled that US President Donald Trump cannot legally block users on Twitter based on their political differences with him. This affirms a lower court decision.

The three-judge panel agreed with last year’s ruling by a federal judge that Trump was using “viewpoint discrimination”, which is in violation of the constitutional rights of people with opposing views.

According to news.com.au, the court sidestepped the question of the president’s free speech rights under the Constitution's First Amendment on a privately-owned internet platform. However, the court affirmed that Trump has created a public forum for official White House business.

“The First Amendment does not permit a public official who utilises a social media account for all manner of official purposes to exclude persons from an otherwise-open online dialogue because they expressed views with which the official disagrees,” the judges wrote in a 29-page opinion.

Trump’s legal response is that he’s not acting in his official capacity when he blocks users, but the court disagreed.

“The president and multiple members of his administration have described his use of the account as official,” the appeals court ruling said.

“We conclude that the evidence of the official nature of the account is overwhelming. We also conclude that once the president has chosen a platform and opened up its interactive space to millions of users and participants, he may not selectively exclude those whose views he disagrees with.”
